2022. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) 1/2 types, IgM antibodies

An IgM antibody test for HSV types 1/2 can detect acute or recent herpes simplex virus infection. It is used to detect rashes, pain, or burning in the lips or genital area.

The herpes simplex virus (HSV) is one of the most common viruses in the world.

HSV-1 primarily causes cold sores on the lips and face.

HSV-2 is more often associated with genital herpes.

However, both types can be transmitted through close contact and cause symptoms in different areas. After the virus enters the body, the immune system's first response is to produce IgM antibodies. These antibodies appear during the acute phase of infection – uring the initial infection or in the event of a relapse (reactivation of the virus).

An IgM test helps:

• detect the active stage of infection (especially important during pregnancy);
• confirm recent infection, even if symptoms are mild or have resolved;
• assess the risk of transmitting the virus to a partner or newborn.

• For the appearance of visips, pain, liver or itching in the lips, mouth, and state organs.
• We are alert for suspicion of herpetic infection – to assess the risk to the fetus.
• Patients with suspected primary HSV infection.
• To differentiate primary infection from relapse (in those infected with IgG).
• At the hour of pregnancy planning, if there is contact with a partner who has been diagnosed with herpes.
