Description
Detection of IgM antibodies to cytomegalovirus (CMV) allows for the diagnosis of an acute infection or reactivation of a chronic process. IgM antibodies appear early, usually by days 5 to 7, and help identify the active phase of the disease even before IgG antibodies develop.
When and who needs the test?
Who and when is testing recommended for?
- In cases of symptoms resembling mononucleosis (fever, lymphadenopathy, weakness).
- Pregnant women – when primary infection is suspected or there is a risk of intrauterine transmission.
- Patients suspected of CMV reactivation, especially those who are immunosuppressed (HIV, transplantation, chemotherapy).
- Newborns suspected of congenital infection.
- To clarify the diagnosis in cases of fever of unknown origin or prolonged infectious processes.
