Description
Free estriol is the main estrogen during pregnancy, produced by the placenta with the participation of the fetus. This test is recommended for screening chromosomal abnormalities (Down, Edwards, and Patau syndromes) and assessing the condition of the fetoplacental unit in the second trimester. Optimally, it is administered between 16 and 18 weeks.
When and who needs the test?
Free estriol testing is recommended for all pregnant women in the second trimester, in particular:
- to assess the risk of chromosomal abnormalities (Down, Edwards, and Patau syndromes);
- as part of triple screening;
- to assess the condition of the fetoplacental unit;
- if neural tube abnormalities are suspected;
- to exclude rare genetic disorders:
- adrenal insufficiency;
- X-linked ichthyosis;
- Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome;
- to predict third trimester complications (preeclampsia, placental abruption).
It is also indicated for the diagnosis of hormonally active tumors of the ovaries, testicles, and adrenal glands.
