Important information

*For pregnant women at 14 - 40 weeks of pregnancy inclusive.

Description

Free estriol is the main estrogen during pregnancy, produced by the placenta with the participation of the fetus. This test is recommended for screening chromosomal abnormalities (Down, Edwards, and Patau syndromes) and assessing the condition of the fetoplacental unit in the second trimester. Optimally, it is administered between 16 and 18 weeks.

Free estriol (E3) is one of the three main estrogens, becoming the dominant hormone during pregnancy. It is produced by the placenta using precursors from the fetal liver and adrenal glands.

This hormone plays a vital role in the normal course of pregnancy. Its levels indicate the condition of the fetoplacental complex and the developmental activity of the fetus.

Furthermore, estriol:

  • stimulates progesterone synthesis in the placenta (due to increased cholesterol uptake);
  • promotes mammary gland growth;
  • ensures the body's hormonal adaptation to pregnancy.

When and who needs the test?

Free estriol testing is recommended for all pregnant women in the second trimester, in particular:

  • to assess the risk of chromosomal abnormalities (Down, Edwards, and Patau syndromes);
  • as part of triple screening;
  • to assess the condition of the fetoplacental unit;
  • if neural tube abnormalities are suspected;
  • to exclude rare genetic disorders:
    • adrenal insufficiency;
    • X-linked ichthyosis;
    • Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome;
  • to predict third trimester complications (preeclampsia, placental abruption).

It is also indicated for the diagnosis of hormonally active tumors of the ovaries, testicles, and adrenal glands.

  • Venous blood

Preparing for a blood test
