Description
Free estriol is the predominant estrogen in the blood and urine of pregnant women. It is produced by the placenta and fetal glands.
The test is recommended for screening fetal chromosomal abnormalities in the second trimester of pregnancy.
The optimal test period is 16-18 weeks of pregnancy. The test is designed to monitor the progression of pregnancy, diagnose multiple pregnancies, Down syndrome, Patau, Edwards and assess the state of the fetoplacental complex.
When and who needs the test?
- assessment of the state of the fetoplacental complex;
- assessment of the risk of developing fetal anomalies - Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome and neural tube defects;
- assessment of the risk of developing rare fetal diseases: adrenal insufficiency, X-linked ichthyosis and Smith-Lemli-Poll syndrome;
- assessment of the risk of developing complications of the third trimester of pregnancy: premature detachment of the placenta and preeclampsia;
- diagnosis of hormonally active tumors of the ovary, testis and adrenal glands.
