Description
Free testosterone is the biologically active fraction of the steroid sex hormone testosterone not bound to blood proteins.
When and who needs the test?
In men:
- delayed development of secondary sexual characteristics or precocious puberty;
- reduced libido and sexual function, impotence;
- suspected hypogonadism;
- infertility;
- andropause ("male menopause");
- severe acne;
- osteoporosis.
In women:
- menstrual cycle disorders;
- infertility;
- hirsutism;
- alopecia;
- acne.
In newborns with ambiguous genitalia, the test may be prescribed together with the assessment of other sex hormone levels and instrumental diagnostic methods.
