Description

Free β-hCG is the active fraction of human chorionic gonadotropin. It is used to assess the risk of chromosomal abnormalities during pregnancy and as a tumor marker in non-pregnant women and in men with suspected trophoblastic, ovarian, or testicular tumors.

Free β-hCG is a fraction of human chorionic gonadotropin synthesized by the syncytiotrophoblast of the placenta. During pregnancy, hormone levels increase as early as 6-10 days after conception, peaking at 8-10 weeks. Free β-hCG is a key biomarker in screening for fetal chromosomal abnormalities (Down, Edwards, and Patau syndromes) in the first and second trimesters of pregnancy (as part of the PRISCA and ASTRAIA programs).

In non-pregnant women and men, elevated free β-hCG levels may indicate trophoblastic tumors (hydatidiform mole, choriocarcinoma), germ cell tumors of the testes or ovaries, and, less commonly, tumors in other locations. The hormone is also produced in small amounts by the pituitary gland.

When and who needs the test?

What is the test for?

In pregnant women:

  • screening for fetal chromosomal abnormalities (first and second trimesters);
  • as part of double and triple tests.

In non-pregnant women and men:

  • diagnosis and treatment monitoring of choriocarcinoma and hydatidiform mole;
  • if germ cell tumors of the ovaries or testicles are suspected;
  • to assess the effectiveness of antitumor treatment;
  • to monitor for relapses.

It is recommended to test in combination with tumor markers: AFP, LDH, CA 125, and PEA. The hormone is also produced in large quantities by the pituitary gland.

Biological material

  • Venous blood

Preparing for a blood test

In order to exclude factors that may affect the test results, we recommend to follow the preparation rules:

  • an important condition for laboratory tests is to take blood on an empty stomach.
  • 6-12 hours before the test, you should avoid eating, drinking alcohol, smoking, and limit physical activity. Drinking...
