Description

The ‘Folate Metabolism Mini’ package is a minimal set of tests that is essential for predicting and assessing the risk of developing cancer, cardiovascular disease, and intrauterine developmental abnormalities during pregnancy due to changes in folate metabolism and increased homocysteine levels, as well as for determining the possibility of developing pathology in progeny.

A comprehensive examination to assess folate metabolism, which is crucial for hematopoiesis, DNA synthesis, the prevention of fetal abnormalities, and the prevention of cardiovascular complications.

  • Folates (erythrocyte concentrations) – reflect the long-term status of folates in the body (unlike serum concentrations), as they accumulate in red blood cells during their maturation.
  • Folates (hematocrit) – an auxiliary indicator for assessing folate levels taking into account the amount of blood cell mass.
  • Folates (whole blood) – an integrated indicator of the total folate content in plasma and cells.
  • Homocysteine – an amino acid, elevated levels of which are associated with a deficiency of vitamin B9 (folic acid), B12, and B6, as well as a high risk of thrombosis, coronary heart disease, and cognitive impairment.
  • Folic acid (serum) is a water-soluble B vitamin that is easily destroyed by heat and plays a role in growth and development. Folic acid is essential for red blood cell differentiation, normal bone marrow and nervous system function, cell division, and is crucial for proper fetal development. Insufficient folate levels in the body lead to excess homocysteine, which leads to increased thrombus formation.

When and who needs the test?

When?

  • Women planning a pregnancy or in the early stages of pregnancy.
  • As part of a workup for infertility patients or after miscarriages.
  • In the case of the birth of a child with isolated neural tube, heart, or urogenital tract defects.
  • In the case of the birth of a child with chromosomal syndromes (with a normal parental karyotype).
  • In the case of hyperhomocysteinemia (elevated homocysteine levels in the blood).
  • In the case of antiphospholipid syndrome.
  • In the case of chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

Who?

  • Patients with suspected megaloblastic anemia, vitamin B9 or B12 deficiency.
  • People with cardiovascular diseases, particularly atherosclerosis, stroke, and thrombosis.
  • Patients with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn's disease, celiac disease).
  • Those with a genetic predisposition to cancer.
  • People with digestive disorders, anemia, or vegetarian/vegan diets.
  • People with depression, cognitive decline, and mental disorders.

Biological material

  • Venous blood

Preparing for a blood test

In order to exclude factors that may affect the test results, we recommend to follow the preparation rules:

  • an important condition for laboratory tests is to take blood on an empty stomach;
  • 6-12 hours before the test, you should avoid eating, drinking alcohol, smoking, and limit physical activity. Drinking...
