Description

A comprehensive laboratory test that includes markers for the two most common parenterally transmitted hepatitis viruses – B and C. Identification of these markers allows for differential diagnosis of diseases with similar clinical presentations.

Viral hepatitis is an infectious liver disease characterized by the development of inflammatory processes in the liver. They differ in their course and consequences, but often have similar clinical manifestations, requiring laboratory differential diagnosis.

They are transmitted through blood, sexually, and during childbirth. They are often asymptomatic or have mild symptoms (weakness, loss of appetite, abdominal discomfort). They can become chronic and lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer.

Markers included in the comprehensive study include:

  • HBV (hepatitis B) – determines total antibodies to HBcorAg (core antigen) and surface antigen HBsAg. These markers can detect both acute and chronic infection or vaccination.
  • HCV (hepatitis C) – specific IgM and IgG antibodies are detected, which may indicate current or past HCV infection. IgG antibodies to specific viral proteins (core, E2, NS3, NS4, NS5) may indicate current or past infection.

This approach provides comprehensive screening and helps differentiate the type of hepatitis, even in the absence of obvious symptoms.

When and who needs the test?

  • If you have symptoms of liver damage: weakness, loss of appetite, nausea, dark urine, jaundice, or discomfort in the right upper quadrant.
  • In case of contact with infected individuals or after potentially risky situations (medical procedures, tattooing, piercing, dental procedures, sharing needles, etc.).
  • If planning a pregnancy.
  • Before hospitalization, surgery, or blood donation.
  • Individuals in high-risk groups – healthcare workers, hemodialysis patients, people with chronic liver disease, and those living with HIV.

In order to exclude factors that may affect the test results, we recommend to follow the preparation rules:

  • an important condition for laboratory tests is to take blood on an empty stomach;
