Description
Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is produced by the parathyroid glands and plays a central role in maintaining stable calcium levels in the blood by acting on the bones, kidneys, and intestines.
PTH testing is recommended for individuals with kidney or gallstones, stomach or duodenal ulcers, bone diseases, high blood pressure, thyroid nodules, or symptoms such as excessive thirst and frequent urination – to help identify potential parathyroid gland dysfunction as an underlying cause.
For accurate assessment, PTH levels should be evaluated together with calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D.
When and who needs the test?
- Hypercalcemia
- Identification of the underlying cause of conditions/diseases: thyroid nodules, urolithiasis, arterial hypertension, cholelithiasis, gastric and/or duodenal ulcer, bone disorders (osteoporosis, osteosclerosis, bone cysts, osteomalacia), polyuria-polydipsia syndrome
- Suspected multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 or 2
- Diagnosis of neurofibromatosis
