Description

The panel is aimed at functioning of the parathyroid glands testing, which control the level of calcium in the blood. If they are not functioning properly, it leads to high levels of calcium in the blood. Over time, this can lead to severe complications, including osteoporosis, high blood pressure, kidney stones, renal failure, stroke, and cardiac arrhythmia. The highest incidence is observed among women over the age of 50.

This panel is designed to help diagnose parathyroid disorders, particularly hyperparathyroidism. It includes PTH (parathyroid hormone), ionized calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D, which together provide a comprehensive assessment of parathyroid gland function. Hyperparathyroidism is the third most common endocrine disorder. Women are affected 3 to 4 times more often than men, most commonly after the age of 50 and in the postmenopausal period. Hyperparathyroidism results from the overproduction of parathyroid hormone (PTH) by the parathyroid glands, leading to elevated calcium levels in the blood (hypercalcemia). The longer the condition persists, the more serious the consequences.

Prolonged  hypercalcemia can cause kidney and gallbladder stones, kidney failure, high blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmias, and osteoporosis. The disease often mimics other conditions, such as hypertension or kidney stone disease, which can delay diagnosis.

Symptoms of hyperparathyroidism may include:

  • Persistent fatigue (main symptom)
  • A general weakness that is hard to describe
  • Kidney stones
  • Chronic kidney disease or kidney failure
  • Loss of interest in activities you previously enjoyed
  • Difficulty concentrating or focusing
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Osteoporosis
  • Bone pain, especially in the arms, legs, and forearms
  • Insomnia or difficulty sleeping through the night
  • Irritability
  • Memory loss and the feeling that you might be developing dementia
  • Heartburn or acid reflux
  • Decreased libido
  • Hypertension or fluctuating blood pressure
  • Frequent headaches
  • Palpitations or irregular heart rhythms

When and who needs the test?

This panel is recommended for all individuals with suspected parathyroid disorders and in the presence of the following symptoms or conditions:

  • Focal lesions in the thyroid gland area
  • Kidney stone disease (urolithiasis)
  • Gallstone disease (cholelithiasis)
  • Stomach and/or duodenal ulcers
  • Polyuria/polydipsia syndrome
  • Arterial hypertension
  • Bone system disorders
  • Psychiatric disturbances
  • Constipation
