Description
Anemia is a condition accompanied by a decrease in the level of hemoglobin, hematocrit, and the number of red blood cells. There are several types of anemia.
The main causes of anemia are blood loss, increased destruction of red blood cells, insufficient formation of a sufficient number of normal red blood cells (the most common cause of this type of anemia is iron deficiency, which is necessary for the formation of red blood cells; anemia in chronic diseases; deficiency of vitamin B12 and / or folic acid, and others).
Several tests can be used to detect iron deficiency: serum iron, ferritin, transferrin. Serum iron – reflects the level of iron in the serum, ferritin – a protein that reflects iron stores in the body, transferrin – a protein that binds to iron and carries it through the blood in the body.
To identify vitamin B12 and/or folic acid deficiency as one of the causes of anemia, it is necessary to examine cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12) and folic acid.
The most common symptom of anemia is fatigue, shortness of breath, and headaches. It is rational to supplement the Anemia Control package with a complete blood count and reticulocyte test.
