Description

The panel makes it possible to assess the patient's androgen status, the level of synthesis of the main hormones that regulate the functioning of the body's reproductive system and adrenal androgens.

Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) is a steroid hormone synthesized from cholesterol in the adrenal cortex (95%) under the control of ACTH and in the ovaries (5%). This determines the clinical significance of this hormone in diagnosing the source of hyperandrogenism: adrenal glands or ovaries. It has stable daily secretion, is excreted in urine, and constitutes the main fraction of 17-ketosteroids. DHEA-S has relatively weak androgenic activity, which is compensated by its relatively high serum concentrations.

Progesterone is a steroid hormone produced in the ovaries, testes, adrenal glands, and placenta from pregnenolone, which is derived from cholesterol. Its synthesis in the testes is stimulated by LH, and during pregnancy by hCG, which initially stimulates the corpus luteum.

SHBG is a hormone regulated by blood levels of androgens and estradiol: increased levels of androgens and androgenic progestins inhibit SHBG synthesis.

Testosterone is the main androgenic hormone in men, and its synthesis is carried out almost exclusively in Leydig cells.

Prolactin is secreted by the anterior pituitary under the control of dopamine (which inhibits its secretion).

When and who needs the test?

It is recommended to perform this panel for patients with signs of hyperandrogenism and reproductive dysfunction (disorders of puberty, menstrual irregularities, infertility, etc.). Also for differential diagnosis.
