Description
The HOMA index is a test that includes the determination of glucose and insulin levels in one blood sample with further calculation of the insulin resistance index. Insulin resistance is a condition where the body needs to produce more insulin to maintain normal glucose levels.
The HOMA index is calculated by the formula: fasting insulin concentration multiplied by fasting glucose concentration divided by a constant factor of 22.5.
This test is necessary for people regardless of body mass index, but it is mandatory for everyone who is overweight/obese; elevated blood glucose levels; reproductive disorders (hyperandrogenism, infertility); with any cardiovascular pathology, with changes in the lipid profile. Optimal to study in combination with glycated hemoglobin.
