Description

A comprehensive test of total and free prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, as well as their ratio. It is used for the early detection of prostate cancer, tumor risk assessment, treatment monitoring, and recurrence monitoring.

PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) is a protein synthesized by prostate cells. It circulates in the blood in a free form (free PSA) or bound to proteins (total PSA = bound + free). In patients with prostate cancer, total PSA levels typically increase, while the proportion of free PSA decreases.

The free-to-total PSA ratio (%) helps differentiate benign conditions (e.g., BPH) from prostate cancer and assess the feasibility of diagnostic procedures such as biopsy.

When and who needs the test?

  • men over 40-50 years of age – as a prostate cancer screening;
  • with elevated total PSA levels – to assess the risk of malignancy;
  • before deciding on a prostate biopsy;
  • with a diagnosis of prostate cancer – to monitor the effectiveness of treatment;
  • for early detection of recurrence or disease progression after therapy.
