Description

The panel allows for the assessment of the synthesis levels of the key pituitary hormones that regulate the function of the reproductive system.

The panel includes LH, FSH, and prolactin.

LH is a glycoprotein hormone secreted by the gonadotropic cells of the anterior pituitary in a pulsatile manner under the influence of gonadoliberin from the hypothalamus. The frequency and amplitude of secretion in women vary depending on the day of the menstrual cycle: in the follicular phase – every 90 minutes, and in the luteal phase – every 2–3 hours. LH and FSH belong to the family of gonadotropins. It consists of a specific β-subunit and a common α-subunit shared with FSH, TSH, and hCG. LH synthesis is regulated by a negative feedback mechanism involving estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone levels in men.

FSH is a peptide gonadotropin hormone secreted in a pulsatile manner by the β-cells of the anterior pituitary in response to the pulsatile release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus. FSH levels in the blood are regulated by negative feedback from steroid hormones (estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, etc.): low levels of sex steroids are associated with increased levels of FSH and LH.

Prolactin is secreted by the anterior pituitary under the control of dopamine (which inhibits secretion) released by the hypothalamus. It is structurally similar to growth hormone. It is present in three forms: the monomeric form (80%), which is biologically active; the dimeric form – 5–20% (big prolactin), which is biologically inactive; and the tetrameric form – 0.5–5% (big prolactin), with low biological activity.

The target organ for prolactin is the mammary gland, where it regulates lactogenesis and galactopoiesis. In healthy individuals, prolactin levels increase in response to stress, hypoglycemia, during sleep, physical activity, after sexual intercourse, and nipple stimulation.

When and who needs the test?

It is recommended to hand over this package to patients with reproductive disorders (impaired puberty, menstrual cycle, infertility, etc.).
