Description

This panel helps assess thyroid gland function and determine the type of hypothyroidism (subclinical or overt) as well as whether it is primary or secondary. It also assists in identifying the form of thyrotoxicosis (subclinical or overt).

Panel No. 2 'Thyroid Panel'  is a set of tests to assess thyroid function.

This panel is prescribed when experiencing symptoms or conditions such as fatigue, drowsiness, lethargy, hair loss, tearfulness, sweating, arrhythmia, depression, sleep disturbances, developmental delays in children, weight changes, enlargement or shrinkage of the thyroid gland, memory impairment, slow or rapid pulse, high or low blood pressure, anemia, voice changes, speech difficulties, shortness of breath, infertility, and menstrual irregularities.

These tests are essential for diagnosing both hypothyroidism (reduced thyroid function) and thyrotoxicosis (increased thyroid function). Depending on the results, it may be appropriate to supplement with tests for anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies (anti-TPO), anti-thyroglobulin antibodies (anti-Tg), and TSH receptor antibodies (TRAb). Because symptoms of thyroid dysfunction—especially in early stages—are often nonspecific and overlap with many chronic conditions, measuring TSH levels is recommended as part of an annual preventive health screening.

When and who needs the test?

This panel is recommended for patients with symptoms of thyroid dysfunction or in the presence of a goiter.
