1066. Phosphorus
Description
Phosphorus is a naturally occurring mineral that plays a key role in metabolic processes and supports the normal function of major organs and body systems. Abnormal phosphorus levels may indicate conditions such as rickets or disorders of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. Because phosphorus and calcium metabolism are closely interconnected, both levels should ideally be evaluated together including their ratio to get a more accurate picture of mineral balance in the body. It's also recommended to measure parathyroid hormone (PTH) and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D levels alongside phosphorus.
