Description
Sodium is a trace element that is present in all body fluids and ensures the regulation of the volume of fluid in the extracellular space.
In laboratory practice, the determination of sodium levels is used to assess the water-salt balance, the selection of therapeutic tactics for patients on infusion therapy, patients with adrenal dysfunction, with cardiovascular diseases and massive edema.
When and who needs the test?
- assessment of the condition for the choice of therapy tactics for dehydration and monitoring the condition of patients on infusion therapy;
- patients with impaired consciousness, behavior and signs of excessive CNS excitability;
- pathological conditions accompanied by edema;
- conditions associated with a deficiency or excess of mineralocorticoids;
- pathology of the cardiovascular system, impaired renal function.
