Description
Bilirubin is a basic component of bile, which is produced in the liver from hemoglobin and other heme-containing substances (myoglobin, cytochromes). Normally, only a small amount of bilirubin enters the bloodstream, and most of it is excreted in the bile.
In case of pathological disorders in the liver, gallbladder or biliary tract, bilirubin is released into the blood. Bilirubin is necessarily determined in all people with jaundice.
This test diagnose hepatitis of various etiologies, hemolytic anemia, cholestasis and many other diseases of the liver and biliary tract.
When and who needs the test?
It is recommended to take it in case of suspicion of liver and/or biliary tract dysfunction, with suspicion of anemia and general inflammatory processes in the body, with jaundice of newborns.
