1041. Urea nitrogen
Description
Urea nitrogen is a substance found in the end products of protein metabolism. The amount of nitrogen directly depends on the concentration of urea in the blood. By studying nitrogen levels, you can find out the concentration of urea and determine the adequacy of the work of the kidneys.
Evaluation of the level of urea nitrogen is used
to determine the performance of the kidneys, diagnosis and evaluation of the
quality of kidney failure. It should be taken in combination with the study of
creatinine, creatinophosphokinase, total protein in urine and proteinogram
When and who needs the test?
- diagnosis of renal failure;
- differentiation between prerenal and postrenal azotemia based on the urea/creatinine ratio;
- monitoring of end-stage renal failure;
- hemodialysis monitoring;
- monitoring the effectiveness of a low-protein diet in CKD.
Biological material
- Venous blood
Preparing for a blood test
In order to exclude factors that may affect the test results, we recommend to follow the preparation rules:
- an important condition for laboratory tests is to take blood on an empty stomach.
- 6-12 hours before the test, you should avoid eating, drinking alcohol, smoking, and limit physical activity. Drinking...
