Description

Gastric tumor marker (CA 72-4) is used to diagnose and monitor stomach, colon, pancreatic, and ovarian cancers. It has high sensitivity to mucinous tumors. Recommended in combination with CA 242, CA 19-9, PEA, and CA 125.

The gastric tumor marker (CA 72-4) is a glycoprotein found in the cell membranes of epithelial tissues. Its increased production is characteristic of mucinous tumors of the gastrointestinal tract (especially the stomach), as well as ovarian and mammary tumors.

This tumor marker is highly sensitive to gastric cancer, particularly in the early stages of the disease. However, CA 72-4 levels may also be slightly elevated in certain inflammatory or benign conditions of the gastrointestinal tract.

This test is often prescribed in combination with other markers (CA 19-9, CA 242, PEA) to improve diagnostic accuracy in cases of suspected gastric cancer, and in combination with CA 125 for ovarian cancer screening. CA 72-4 should not be used as a sole diagnostic method. Values ​​should be assessed dynamically and in conjunction with other examinations (ultrasound, CT, biopsy, etc.).

When and who needs the test?

  • patients with suspected stomach, colon, or pancreatic cancer;
  • to monitor the effectiveness of treatment and early detection of gastric cancer recurrence;
  • in cases of diagnosed mucinous ovarian cancer – to monitor the response to therapy;
  • to differentiate between benign and malignant ovarian tumors;
  • to assess tumor spread and the presence of metastases.
