Description
Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas. Insulin is the primary regulator of carbohydrate and fat metabolism in the body. Impaired insulin secretion and altered tissue sensitivity are associated with the development of diabetes mellitus types 1 and 2. Abnormal insulin levels are also characteristic of other endocrine disorders.
Insulin levels are assessed to determine the cause of hypoglycemia (low glucose levels), diagnose pancreatic tumors, and identify insulin resistance as part of the HOMA index, as well as in polycystic ovary syndrome and metabolic syndrome.

- In some cases, to determine the absolute insulin requirement in patients with diabetes.
