Description
Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) is one of the steroid hormones, a precursor of testosterone and androstenedione. The test should be performed when a girl or woman has excessive hair growth on the face and body, acne, menstrual irregularities, or when a woman is unable to conceive; or when a boy develops signs of precocious puberty.
It is optimal to evaluate it in combination with FSH, LH, estradiol, prolactin, free testosterone index, and 17-OHP.
When and who needs the test?
- Menstrual cycle disorders.
- Clinical presentation of hyperandrogenism (hirsutism, alopecia, acne, seborrhea).
- Virilization syndrome.
- Differential diagnosis of androgen sources — markers of adrenal hyperandrogenism.
- Establishing the diagnosis of PCOS.
- Differential diagnosis of androgen-producing tumors in the presence of masses in the adrenal or gonadal regions.
