Description
The p24 antigen and HIV antibodies appear in the blood at different times. The viral p24 protein appears approximately 2 weeks after infection. Antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2 develop later (starting from the 4th week after infection). Combined detection of these markers minimizes the risk of a false-negative result and enables early identification of the infection.
When and who needs the test?
- Individuals with suspected HIV infection. In cases of frequent recurrent infectious diseases.
- At the stage of planning pregnancy.
- Healthcare workers – after potential contact with infected biological material.
- Individuals with frequent changes of sexual partners or unprotected sexual contacts.
- To determine the infectious status of a patient's sexual partner.
- Blood, tissue, and organ donors.
- During routine evaluation before surgical interventions or procedures involving blood exposure.
- It is recommended to perform testing no earlier than 2-3 weeks after possible exposure and repeat after 6 weeks if the result is inconclusive.
