Description
Luteinizing hormone (LH) is a gonadotropic hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary that stimulates the production of sex hormones (estrogens and progesterone) in both men and women.
When and who needs the test?
In pediatrics:
- disorders of pubertal development in both boys and girls.
In men:
- diagnosis of primary and secondary hypogonadism;
- abnormal semen parameters (identification of impaired spermatogenesis);
- exclusion of ectopic LH secretion by tumors.
In women:
- assessment of any menstrual irregularities;
- differential diagnosis of primary (hypergonadotropic) and secondary (hypogonadotropic) hypogonadism;
- diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (in combination with FSH);
- identifying causes of amenorrhea;
- diagnosing causes and monitoring treatment of infertility;
- laboratory monitoring of ovulation induction;
- menopause prediction;
- diagnosis of climacteric syndrome;
- congenital disorders with chromosomal abnormalities (Turner syndrome);
- exclusion of ectopic LH secretion by tumors.
