1006. Total Thyroxine (T4 total)
Description
Thyroxine (T4) is one of the primary hormones produced by the thyroid gland and is essential for normal metabolic function. Total T4 reflects the combined amount of both protein-bound and free thyroxine circulating in the blood.
Testing is recommended if there are symptoms of thyroid disease, thyroid gland enlargement (goiter), or thyroid nodules. It is also indicated when TSH test results show elevated or decreased levels, or when monitoring thyroid-related treatment.
It is optimal to test together with free T3, free T4, TSH, and thyroid antibodies.
