Description
Thyroxine (T4) is a thyroid hormone that plays a key role in regulating metabolism. In the bloodstream, T4 exists in two forms: bound to blood proteins and unbound (free). Only free T4 is biologically active and capable of affecting the body’s physiological processes, while the protein-bound form remains inactive.
Measuring free T4 levels allows for the evaluation of not just the quantity of hormone present, but also its activity, which is essential for diagnosing and managing thyroid disorders.
