Preparing for tests

The recommendations of your doctor for preparation are top priority!
Blood tests

In order to avoid factors that can distort the results, you should:

  • An important condition for laboratory tests is blood taking on an empty stomach. 6-12 hours before the test, you should avoid eating, drinking, smoking and limit physical activity. Still water is allowed to drink.
  • Stop taking your medicine before having a blood test. If you should keep taking your medicine as prescribed, please, inform about it the laboratory person.
  • Children up to 5 years of age – It’s advisable to have some boiled water (150-200 mL during 30 min before test.
  • Nursing babies – It’s advisable to make as long as possible interval between feeding and blood sampling.

Prolactin

Sampling should be done in the morning, up to 2 hours after waking up.
You should:

  • be calm
  • avoid breast palpation before test

Renin active, Aldosterone/renin ratio

  • Blood sampling is performed after 9:00 only in lab centers at the laboratories: Kyiv, Palladin Ave., 46/2; Dnipro, Gogol str., 15; Lviv, Konovalets str., 33; Odessa, Segedska str., 14A; Chernivtsi, Avangardna str., 53; Vinnytsia, Pirogov str, 37.
  • You should stand upright for 2 hours before blood sampling (not necessarily at the lab center).
  • Just before blood sampling, you should be in a sitting position for at least 5 minutes (at the lab center).

Testosterone, Aldosterone, Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)

  • Due to circadian rhythm it’s advisable to take a blood test until 10 a.m.

Total Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA)

  • Blood sampling is recommended to be performed on the empty stomach in the morning. It can also be performed during the day if you avoid eating fatty food and fast up to 6 hours.
  • Refrain from ejaculation for 48 hours.
  • Three days before test it’s advisable to exclude any urological procedures, rectal exam, ergometry, cystoscopy, colonoscopy and prostate massage. It’s desirable to have the test three weeks after the prostate biopsy.
  • It’s recommended to refrain from physical exercises that have the impact on prostate gland (cycling) and heat impacts (sauna, hot bath) for 3 days before taking the material.

Urine tests

Before urine sampling you should:

  • wash the external genital parts (men should open glans penis)
  • women insert a tampon into the vagina.

How do you collect a urine sample from a baby? – After external genital parts wash it’s advisable to sample urine into pediatric urine collector. Urine pressed out of a diapie is not researchable. Urine should be sampled into a special sterile container or washed clean glass container.

Clinical urinalysis

  • The average morning portion is used.
  • Collect your urine in the amount of 15-25 ml in a clean dry container (sterile pharmacy disposable urine container). To do this, a small first portion of urine should be flushed down the toilet. Then with the continuous urine stream fill the container (second portion). The rest of the urine (third portion) flush down the toilet.
  • The container with urine close tightly with a lid, place in a clean disposable bag and deliver to the laboratory. Biomaterial for clinical urine test and urine test according to Nechiporenko can be taken on the same day in one container.

Urine test by Nechiporenko

  • The average morning portion is used.
  • Collect your urine in the amount of 15-25 ml in a clean dry container (sterile pharmacy disposable urine container). To do this, a small first portion of urine should be flushed down the toilet. Then with the continuous urine stream fill the container (second portion). The rest of the urine (third portion) flush down the toilet.
  • The container with urine close tightly with a lid, place in a clean disposable bag and deliver to the laboratory. Biomaterial for clinical urine test and urine test according to Nechiporenko can be taken on the same day in one container.

Urine test for cortisol

  • Daily urine is sampled for this study.
  • Urine is collected for 24 hours keeping regular drinking regime.
  • When you wake up in the morning you should void your bladder. This first morning dose of urine is released into the toilet.
  • All the next urine is collected within 24 hours in a clean container with a volume of at least 2 liters.
  • The urine should be stored in a cool place without freezing (ideally on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator at the temperature of 4 - 8 °С).
  • The last dose of urine should be collected next day at the same time when sampling was started (the time when you void your bladder).
  • When the daily portion of urine is collected, you should measure its volume, thoroughly blend it and pour its 100 – 150 ml into sterile disposable container.
  • You should write down the full volume of sampled urine (daily diuresis) on the container.
  • The container with urine should be tightly closed with a lid, put into clean disposable bag and delivered to the laboratory.

Total protein, amylase (diastase), urine test for creatinine

  • Spontaneous urine portion is used.

  • When collecting a container with urine, it is necessary to store it in a cool place (best – in a refrigerator on the bottom shelf at a temperature of +4 – +8°C), preventing it from freezing.
  • The last portion of urine should be collected clearly at the same time the next day, when the collection was started the day before — that is, the first emptying of the bladder. After collecting daily urine, first measure the daily volume as accurately as possible, mix thoroughly and pour 100-150 ml of the total volume into a sterile pharmacy container.
  • Close the container with urine tightly with a lid, place it in a clean disposable bag and deliver it to the laboratory center. Be sure to write on the container the amount of urine collected per day (daily diuresis).
