Description
Determining the concentration and activity of C1-esterase inhibitor, along with measuring the concentration of the C4 complement component, is used to diagnose hereditary angioedema (HAE); acquired angioedema in the context of autoimmune or oncological diseases; or as part of the differential diagnosis of other conditions, including during the use of ACE inhibitors.
A change in C1-esterase inhibitor activity is not a definitive diagnosis. Further laboratory and instrumental investigations for autoimmune and systemic diseases, as well as consultation with a specialist, are required.
When and who needs the test?
- Recurrent edema of various localization
- Laryngeal edema in medical history
- Recurrent abdominal syndrome – periodic episodes of abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea (more commonly seen in childhood) o Presence or suspicion of systemic autoimmune disease in family history, particularly systemic lupus erythematosus
Determining the activity of C1 complement factor inhibitor (C1-esterase) does not allow for a definitive diagnosis. Additional laboratory and instrumental investigations for autoimmune and systemic diseases are required.
