9773. West Nile virus, IgG/IgM antibodies
Description
The geographical range of the West Nile fever virus has significantly expanded, now covering North, Central, and South America, as well as Europe and the countries of the Mediterranean Basin.
In Ukraine, natural foci of the WNV virus are located in the Northwestern Black Sea region (Crimea, Odesa, Mykolaiv, and Kherson oblasts), as well as in the eastern and western parts of the country.
In Ukraine, the West Nile virus is classified as a Group I especially dangerous pathogen, and according to WHO international standards – as a Group IV risk agent. The diagnosis is made based on serological testing.
When and who needs the test?
- febrile condition, facial hyperemia
- headache, fatigue
- conjunctivitis
- pain in the calf muscles, joints, and back; muscle weakness
- nausea, vomiting
- skin rash (on the torso)
- lymphadenopathy
- neck muscle rigidity
- stupor, disorientation
- vision loss
- numbness and paralysis.

Preparing for a blood test
In order to exclude factors that may affect the test results, we recommend to follow the preparation rules:
- an important condition for laboratory tests is to take blood on an empty stomach.
