9766. Progesterone (saliva)
Description
A non-invasive supplemental test used to assess hormonal imbalance and to help identify potential causes of hormone-related reproductive disorders. Progesterone enters saliva from the bloodstream via passive diffusion. Since large steroid-binding proteins cannot pass into saliva during its formation, measuring progesterone in saliva makes it possible to assess only the bioactive (free) fraction of the hormone.
When and who needs the test?
A non-invasive and convenient procedure (samples can be collected at any time of day), preferred when blood collection is difficult. Salivary progesterone levels differ from plasma concentrations and depend on salivary flow rate. Due to natural hormonal fluctuations, repeated saliva sampling allows for more accurate tracking of progesterone levels. Serial salivary progesterone measurements can be used to monitor the menstrual cycle, determine ovulation timing, and assess corpus luteum function, which is especially important during early pregnancy. It is important to avoid blood contamination of the sample (total progesterone concentration is higher in blood than in saliva).
