Description
Antibodies to NMDA receptors are specific proteins produced by the immune system against NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptors of nerve cells. Damage to the nervous system caused by this type of antibody is the underlying cause of autoimmune encephalitis. A positive NMDA antibody test result is associated with encephalitis presenting with psychiatric symptoms, seizures, dyskinesias, dystonia, and autonomic instability.
Early diagnosis and prompt immunotherapeutic treatment can ensure full recovery of nervous system function.
When and who needs the test?

- Concurrent presence of psychiatric and neurological symptoms, especially in young patients.
