Description
Stinging nettle is a perennial flowering herb from the nettle family. There are over 50 varieties of nettle. It grows near buildings, along roads, in forests, meadows, on soils rich in nitrogenous substances. Blooms from June to August.
Contact with the wretched species of nettle leads to dermatitis, proceeding by mechanisms of immediate or delayed types, more often in the form of contact urticaria. Reactions are usually mild and do not pose a risk to human health. But nettle pollen causes symptoms of allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and bronchial asthma in sensitized individuals.
In the presence of sensitization to weed pollen, cross-allergic reactions to allergens of other types of weeds and meadow grasses, some trees (for example, birch, olive), latex, honey, sunflower and their seeds, nuts, peanuts, carrots, apples, melons and others are possible. Sensitized individuals may have allergic reactions to herbal medicines. One of the manifestations of cross-allergy can be oral allergic syndrome – the appearance of swelling, tingling and itching in the gums, tongue, lips when eating the above products.
