Description
Aspergillus fumigatus and Penicillium notatum fungi are most found in house dust and damp room air, and in the smaller amount – Cladosporium herbarum, Alternaria tenuis and Candida albicans in smaller amounts. Aspergillus fumigatus and Penicillium notatum multiply all year round, so their spore counts do not change significantly over time. Aspergillus fumigatus actively infest damp rooms, bathrooms, toilets, sanitary facilities, old furniture, spoiled food and organic waste.
Agricultural workers, miners, brewers, metro workers, tobacco factory workers, librarians, pharmacists and microbiologists have occupational risk factors for fungal allergy. In healthy individuals, the immune system of the respiratory tract has sufficient capacity to destroy the pathogen. When hypersensitised, the fungi attack the respiratory tract, causing severe allergic diseases: allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, bronchial asthma, and cause about a third of exacerbations of atopic dermatitis.
The test is used to determine the blood concentration of IgE, which is specific to the allergen Aspergillus fumigatus mold fungus; elevated levels of allergen-specific IgE may occur before the development of clinical manifestations of allergy.
When and who needs the test?
To be indicated in patients with suspected bronchial asthma and respiratory allergies; in patients with suspected allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) in predisposed patients, and to monitor specific immunoglobulin levels during treatment.
