Description
Lepidoglyphus destructor is a microscopic mite belonging to the group of so-called storage (grain) mites. It is commonly found in grain, flour, feed mixtures, dried foodstuffs, and food storage facilities. The mite thrives and reproduces actively in warm and humid environments. Lepidoglyphus destructor is not a component of house dust; however, it may cause allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, asthma, and even oral mite anaphylaxis (pancake syndrome) when ingested through contaminated food.
Allergens of Lepidoglyphus destructor can become airborne with dust particles and trigger allergic reactions, including allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma, or exacerbation of atopic dermatitis — particularly in individuals who handle grain or animal feed, or who work in storage facilities.
When and who needs the test?
- Agricultural, mill, and bakery workers who handle grain products and are suspected of having an allergy to storage mites.
- Patients with allergy symptoms that worsen after contact with grain crops.
- People with allergic reactions of unknown etiology.
- Before starting allergen-specific immunotherapy (ASIT) to determine sensitization.
- Patients with suspected oral mite anaphylaxis (pancake syndrome) after consuming foods that may contain mites.
