9015. Histamine
Description
Histamine is a substance that plays an important role in the body, particularly in allergic reactions, inflammatory processes, and the regulation of other physiological functions. Certain carcinoid tumors located in the gastrointestinal tract can also produce excess histamine. The level of histamine in the blood and urine is usually very low, but it can rise significantly during allergic reactions, mast cell activation, and other pathological conditions. In some cases, such as anaphylaxis, a simultaneous increase in both histamine and tryptase levels in the blood serves as strong evidence of the condition. This test measures the amount of histamine in the blood. Histamine testing helps diagnose conditions associated with histamine excess or impaired metabolism. It is used primarily for diagnosing immediate-type allergic reactions.
When and who needs the test?
- сonfirmation of an anaphylactic reaction;
- assessment of the risk and severity of anaphylaxis;
- diagnosis and monitoring of mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS);
- diagnosis of certain tumors (mastocytoma, polycythemia vera, chronic myeloid leukemia, carcinoid tumors);
- differential diagnosis of symptoms associated with mast cell activation (hives, vomiting, abdominal pain);
- monitoring treatment effectiveness in patients with chronic conditions (systemic mastocytosis or chronic urticaria).
Biological material
- Venous blood
Preparing for a blood test
In order to exclude factors that may affect the test results, we recommend to follow the preparation rules:
- an important condition for laboratory tests is to take blood on an empty stomach.
- 6-12 hours before the test, you should avoid eating, drinking alcohol, smoking, and limit physical activity. Drinking...
