8254. PMF. Muscle biopsy (myopathies)
Important information
*For testing, the brougt-in biomaterial is taken
*For the test ordering a special doctor's referral is required
Description
Muscle biopsy (myopathies) is a histological (pathomorphological) examination of a muscle tissue sample obtained through biopsy. The examination allows the physician to assess the structure and condition of muscle fibers, identify inflammatory, dystrophic, metabolic, or hereditary changes, and determine the cause of muscle weakness or other muscle function disorders. The examination is used when myopathies, muscular dystrophies, inflammatory or neuromuscular diseases are suspected, as well as in cases where other diagnostic methods are insufficiently informative.
When and who needs the test?
- unexplained muscle weakness, pathological fatigability, myalgia or muscle spasms;
- suspected inflammatory myopathies (myositis, polymyositis, dermatomyositis);
- suspected hereditary muscular dystrophies, metabolic or mitochondrial myopathies;
- need for diagnostic confirmation when clinical presentation, biochemical markers, electrodiagnostic studies, magnetic resonance imaging or other investigative methods are non-diagnostic.
Biological material
- Various types of biopsy material depending on the test
