Important information
*The test can be performed only from Mon. to Sun. at the laboratory located at 46/2 Akademika Palladina Ave., Kyiv.
Description
Nasal culture for Corynebacterium diphtheriae is a specific microbiological test that allows detection of the diphtheria pathogen, assessment of the degree of mucosal colonization, and determination of bacterial antibiotic susceptibility.
Automated identification of microorganisms is performed using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry on the MALDI Biotyper sirius IVD System analyzer (Bruker, Germany).
If the result is positive, antimicrobial susceptibility testing is performed using the disk diffusion method to help select effective antibacterial therapy.
When and who needs the test?
- Patients with symptoms of diphtheria: thick coating on the tonsils, sore throat, neck swelling, fever.
- Contacts of infected individuals – for detection of carrier status.
- Healthcare workers and childcare facility staff – as part of screening.
- Before hospitalization in an infectious disease or ENT department.
- During an epidemic outbreak or in the event of an imported case.
Biological material
- Various types of biological material depending on the test
Preparing for nasal biomaterial sampling
- Material taking is carried out before the start of treatment with antibacterial/antifungal drugs.
- In case of treatment monitoring – after the end of the course of antibacterial/antifungal drugs after 14 days.
- Do not rinse your nasal passages before taking scraping.
