Description
Throat culture for Corynebacterium diphtheriae is a specific microbiological test that allows detection of the diphtheria pathogen, assessment of bacterial quantity, and determination of antibiotic susceptibility.
If the result is positive, antimicrobial susceptibility testing is performed using the disk diffusion method to select effective antibacterial therapy. A comprehensive diagnostic approach includes testing for antibodies to Corynebacterium diphtheriae toxin, a complete blood count, and a culture for Group A hemolytic streptococcus.
When and who needs the test?
- Patients with symptoms of diphtheria: thick coating on the tonsils, sore throat, neck swelling, fever.
- Contacts within the infection focus – for carrier detection.
- Medical personnel and childcare workers – as part of routine screening.
- Before hospital admission to infectious disease or ENT departments.
- During an epidemic outbreak or in case of an imported infection.
Biological material
- Various types of biological material depending on the test
Preparing for pharyngeal swab taking
- The sample is collected before the start of treatment with antibacterial/antifungal drugs.
- In case of treatment monitoring – after the end of the course of antibacterial/antifungal drugs after 14 days.
- The throat swab is collected on an empty stomach or 3-4 hours after eating and drinking (water, coffee,...
