Description
Urogenital culture for Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus) is a laboratory test that allows detection and quantification of this pathogen and evaluation of its antibiotic susceptibility.
If the streptococcus is detected, an antibiotic susceptibility test with MIC (minimal inhibitory concentration) is performed – a parameter that helps the physician select effective antibacterial therapy for treatment or prevention of complications.
When and who needs the test?
- For pregnant women in the third trimester (usually at 35-37 weeks) to exclude the risk of fetal infection during childbirth.
- In cases of suspected bacterial infections of the urogenital tract (vaginitis, cervicitis, urethritis).
- In cases of premature rupture of membranes, signs of chorioamnionitis, or a prolonged rupture of membranes lasting more than 18 hours.
- For women with a history of miscarriages, stillbirths, or preterm deliveries.
- To monitor the effectiveness of antibiotic therapy in previously detected S. agalactiae infection.
- For newborns with clinical signs of infection – to identify a possible source of infection transmitted from the mother.
Biological material
- Various types of biological material depending on the test

Women
- Collection of material should be carried out before the start of treatment with antibacterial/antimycotic drugs (general and local).
- In case of treatment monitoring – 14 days after completion of the course of treatment with antibacterial/antimycotic drugs.
- Avoid sexual intercourse for 3 days.
