Description
One of the main laboratory diagnostic methods for otomycosis is microscopic examination of fungal cultures isolated from biological material. Fungal culture for Candida microflora allows the detection of yeast-like fungi of the genus Candida spp. in ear samples and determination of their quantity.
In cases where clinically significant growth of Candida spp. is obtained, the study is supplemented by antifungal susceptibility testing – an antimycotic susceptibility profile performed using the classical disk diffusion method.
When and who needs the test?
- Suspicion of fungal ear infection (otomycosis), especially in patients at risk (diabetes mellitus, weakened immunity, prolonged use of antibiotics, corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, contact with stray animals without protective measures, etc.).
- Performing differential diagnosis of otitis.
- Selection of rational antifungal therapy and evaluation of its effectiveness.
- Ineffectiveness of standard otitis therapy.
- If there is a need to switch to an antifungal drug (AFD) of another class.
Biological material
- Various types of biological material depending on the test
Preparation for taking external ear discharge
Medical manipulation. Brought in material in a tube with the transport medium 'Amies'.
- The material is collected before the start of treatment with antibacterial/antifungal drugs.
- In case of treatment monitoring – 14 days after the end of the course of antibacterial/antifungal drugs. Indicate on the...
