Description
Semen (ejaculate) culture is a microbiological test that allows determination of the qualitative and quantitative composition of semen microflora, including the detection of conditionally pathogenic microorganisms in high titers, pathogenic microorganisms, and their antibiotic susceptibility. The analysis is used for diagnosing infections of the genitourinary system and assessing their impact on male reproductive function.
When and who needs the test?
- For men with signs of inflammatory processes of the genitourinary system (discomfort, pain in the perineum, frequent or painful urination, discharge from the urethra).
- In cases of suspected prostatitis, epididymitis, orchoepididymitis, or other infections of the urogenital tract.
- For patients with fertility disorders or abnormalities in the spermogram (reduced sperm motility, volume, or count).
- For men with recurrent urogenital infections or after an ineffective course of antibiotic therapy.
- To monitor the effectiveness of treatment after antibiotic therapy. • Before planning pregnancy – to exclude infectious factors that may affect reproductive health.

Preparing for semen testing
- Sample collection is performed before the start of treatment with antibacterial/antifungal drugs.
- In case of treatment monitoring – 14 days after the end of the course of treatment with antibacterial/antifungal drugs.
- Refrain from ejaculation for 3 days.
- Avoid heat exposure for 24 hours – bathhouse, sauna....
