Description

PCR testing for Toxoplasma gondii in uterine swabs is a method for the qualitative detection of parasite DNA. It provides information on the presence of active infection in the endometrium. It is used for miscarriage, endometritis, and suspected intrauterine infection.

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular parasite that can infect endometrial and placental tissue, especially during primary infection during pregnancy or reactivation in women with compromised immune systems. Its penetration into the uterine cavity can cause chronic inflammation, threatened miscarriage, or fetal infection.

PCR testing of endometrial scrapings is a sensitive molecular diagnostic method that detects Toxoplasma gondii DNA directly in endometrial material. Unlike serology, which indicates past exposure to the pathogen, PCR detects the active presence of the parasite in the reproductive tract.

This method is especially valuable:

  • For unexplained causes of recurrent miscarriages or miscarriages in the first trimester.
  • In women with suspected chronic endometritis of infectious origin.
  • In patients with a history of TORCH infections who are planning pregnancy.
  • In histopathological follow-up after pregnancy loss, to clarify the infectious etiology.

Detection of Toxoplasma gondii DNA in the uterine cavity is direct confirmation of a parasitic infection and the basis for prescribing specific therapy or postponing pregnancy planning until the infection is resolved. The result is qualitative: detected/not detected. Recommended as part of a comprehensive approach to diagnosing the infectious origins of reproductive health disorders.

When and who needs the test?

  • For women with recurrent miscarriages, especially in the first trimester.
  • If chronic endometritis or unexplained endometrial inflammation is suspected.
  • In cases of unexplained pregnancy loss, to exclude toxoplasmosis as a cause.
  • When planning a pregnancy in women with TORCH risks or after toxoplasmosis.
  • As part of an examination for intrauterine fetal infection (in combination with PCR testing of the placenta, amniotic fluid, and serology).
