Important information

* For this test, you must submit the first morning urine sample in a vacuum tube containing boric acid.

* Please purchase a special urine collection kit in advance (which includes a container with a needle holder and a vacuum tube containing boric acid).

Description

Quantitative PCR for Ureaplasma species in urine allows for the detection and assessment of the concentration of the pathogen that causes urogenital tract infections. The test helps differentiate bacterial carriage from active inflammation and monitor the effectiveness of treatment.

Ureaplasma species (particularly Ureaplasma urealyticum and Ureaplasma parvum) are opportunistic bacteria that can colonize the mucous membranes of the genitourinary tract. Normally, they may be present in small numbers, but if they overgrow or their microflora is disrupted, they can cause infectious and inflammatory diseases, including urethritis, prostatitis, cervicitis, endometritis, salpingitis, infertility, and pregnancy complications.

Quantitative PCR not only detects Ureaplasma DNA but also assesses the bacterial load (copies/ml), which is important for:

  • differentiating carriage from clinically significant infection;
  • determining the need for antibiotic therapy;
  • monitoring the effectiveness of treatment over time;
  • assessing the risk of partner infection or complications during pregnancy;

The sample for testing is the first portion of morning urine, which contains the highest number of cells and microorganisms from the urethra. The method is convenient, non-invasive and recommended as part of a comprehensive examination if an STI is suspected or in the case of an asymptomatic course with laboratory abnormalities (leukocytes in urine, sperm, etc.).

When and who needs the test?

  • For symptoms of urethritis (burning, frequent urination, abnormal discharge).
  • Men with abnormal sperm counts or chronic prostatitis.
  • Women before pregnancy or after miscarriage.
  • Couples with infertility or in preparation for IVF/ICSI.
  • For a positive qualitative PCR result – to assess the clinical significance.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of treatment over time.

Biological material

  • Urine

Preparing for urinalysis

  • Urine is collected before the start of treatment with antibacterial/antifungal drugs.
  • In case of treatment monitoring – 14 days after the end of the course of treatment with antibacterial/antifungal drugs.
  • Urine cannot be collected from bed linen or a urine bag.
  • Bladder catheterization is not used for...
