Description
Quantitative PCR testing for HHV-6 from an oropharyngeal swab allows for the detection of active infection in the oral and pharyngeal mucosa. This test helps establish a diagnosis in patients of all ages with prolonged fever, sore throat, rash, or suspected viral infection.
When and who needs the test?
- For prolonged or recurrent fever without an established cause.
- For sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, rash, or general weakness.
- For newborns and young children – if HHV-6-associated infection is suspected.
- For immunosuppressed patients (HIV, cancer, post-transplant).
- For suspected viral oropharyngeal or systemic infection.
- To monitor the effectiveness of treatment or assess the activity of a chronic infection.

Preparing for oropharyngeal swab taking
- Taking the material is carried out on an empty stomach or 2–4 hours after eating.
- Before taking the sample, you should rinse your mouth with drinking water.
