3088. PCR. Cytomegalovirus (oro/pharyngeal scraping, quantification)
Description
PCR testing for cytomegalovirus (CMV) in oral/pharyngeal swabs allows detection of the virus and assessment of its activity in the mucous membranes. This test is used when active CMV infection is suspected, especially in immunosuppressed patients, children, and pregnant women.
When and who needs the test?
- Children – when active CMV infection is suspected, especially in infants with symptoms;
- Pregnant women – if CMV IgM or low IgG avidity is detected;
- Immunosuppressed patients – including those with HIV, post-transplant, or undergoing cancer treatment;
- Couples planning pregnancy – as part of preconception evaluation;
- As part of TORCH screening in both children and adults.

Preparing for oropharyngeal swab taking
- Taking the material is carried out on an empty stomach or 2–4 hours after eating.
- Before taking the sample, you should rinse your mouth with drinking water.
