Description
Quantitative EBV PCR from an oropharyngeal swab allows for the determination of the viral load in the mucosa. The test detects local viral activity or reactivation and is indicated for suspected mononucleosis, tonsillitis, chronic sore throat, and complications in immunocompromised patients.
When and who needs the test?
- If infectious mononucleosis is suspected (especially if IgM or IgG is negative).
- In children and adolescents with frequent tonsillitis, enlarged tonsils, and low-grade fever.
- In patients with chronic sore throat, oropharyngeal discomfort, or without a bacterial pathogen.
- In immunosuppressed patients – to monitor reactivation.
- In lymphoproliferative conditions or suspected EBV-associated oropharyngeal tumors.
Biological material
- Scrapes from various sites depending on the test
Preparing for oropharyngeal swab taking
- Taking the material is carried out on an empty stomach or 2–4 hours after eating.
- Before taking the sample, you should rinse your mouth with drinking water.
In the case of sample collection at a Synevo branch, you will be offered to rinse your mouth with water from a cooler
