Description
This package is elaborated to diagnose tumors associated with abnormal catecholamine levels, such as pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma. Catecholamines are a group of similar hormones produced by the adrenal medulla in response to stress. The main catecholamines – dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine – regulate heart rate, blood pressure, and energy metabolism. After their action, catecholamines are metabolized and excreted primarily in the urine as metabolites. A 24-hour urine sample allows for the determination of the total amount of catecholamines produced over the course of a day, which more accurately reflects metabolic activity than a blood sample. Urine levels are less susceptible to the effects of acute stressors or temporary physiological changes that can affect plasma levels. This stability allows for a more accurate interpretation of the results.
