Description
Antibodies to SS-A (Ro) are directed to proteins associated with Y1-Y5 RNA in the spliceosome. These antibodies are most found in Sjögren's syndrome and systemic lupus erythematosus. In SLE, their production is associated with a certain set of clinical manifestations and laboratory disorders: photosensitivity, Sjögren's syndrome, hyperproduction of rheumatoid factor.
The presence of anti-SS-A antibodies in the blood of a pregnant woman is associated with a high risk of developing neonatal lupus syndrome in a child.
When and who needs the test?
- recommended for the diagnosis of systemic connective tissue diseases;
- for differential diagnosis of some autoimmune diseases;
- for monitoring the course and assessing the progression of rheumatic diseases.
