Description
Inhibin A is a hormone synthesized in the ovaries, placenta, and fetal tissues. Elevated levels during pregnancy may indicate the risk of Down syndrome. It is also used to diagnose preeclampsia. In non-pregnant women, it is used to assess ovarian function, diagnose luteal phase deficiency, and diagnose certain ovarian tumors.
When and who needs the test?
In pregnant women (second trimester):
- as part of a quadruple screening to detect fetal chromosomal abnormalities (along with estriol, β-hCG, and AFP);
- to assess the risk of Down syndrome;
- to diagnose preeclampsia.
In non-pregnant women:
- to assess ovarian reserve;
- if luteal phase insufficiency is suspected;
- in cases of recurrent miscarriage;
- to predict the prognosis in cases of threatened miscarriage;
- to diagnose granulosa cell tumor of the ovary, epithelial ovarian cancer, endometrial hyperplasia, and complicated bleeding;
- as a more accurate marker for hydatidiform mole compared to hCG.
In men:
- as part of a comprehensive infertility assessment.

Preparing for a blood test
In order to exclude factors that may affect the test results, we recommend to follow the preparation rules:
- an important condition for laboratory tests is to take blood on an empty stomach.
