2267. Diphtheria toxoid, IgG antibodies
Description
Diphtheria is an acute, deadly infectious disease with airborne transmission. Diphtheria is caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae. The bacterium produces a very dangerous toxin, which, when released into the bloodstream, can affect the heart, kidneys, adrenal glands and nervous system.
In order to prevent the disease, vaccination with diphtheria toxoid is carried out. Immune cells react to contact with the toxoid by releasing antibodies, which provides immunity.
Determination of IgG antibodies makes it possible to assess immunity to diphtheria. The test is used to determine the pre- and post-vaccination status and adjust the treatment of diphtheria.
When and who needs the test?
Symptoms of diphtheria infection – double (on the 1-3rd and 7-10th day of the disease) determination of indications for vaccination or revaccination, evaluation of the effectiveness of vaccination against diphtheria.
